So I took The Spousal Unit out for dinner to celebrate our 48 years of marriage this evening at a very nice place that's become a favorite for celebratory dinners (
Gibbet Hill Grill, fwiw) The staff was aware of the event and gave us a prime table with a lovely view of the rolling hills out in Groton during sunset. They had just today dropped their new seasonal menu loaded with locally grown spring time crops and young lamb and veal, and we tucked into lamb racks surrounded by mixed veggies and broiled potatoes. Yummers!
One thing that caught my eye and left me intrigued was an alleged woven flour bag hanging on a wall. It claimed to have held 140 pounds of...what turned out to be wheat flour (and as noted, apparently "Choice Wheat" made for "Low Grade". Kinda surprised a seller would put that on their product, but what do I know).
But the bag didn't look much larger than what I buy my base malts in - which weigh either 50 or 55 pounds (domestic vs European malts). Obviously one can't get scale out of a picture like this but here it is anyway.

Google says the density of wheat flour is 42 pounds per cubic foot, while barley malt is 30. Meanwhile 140 pounds in that bag is nearly 3 times what I'd expect if it was full of barley malt, not just 40% more. So I'm left with either acknowledging the bag is much larger than it looks, or it's an inauthentic flour bag sporting the markings of a real bag.
I know, not earthshaking stuff here, just a curiosity to me...
Cheers!
