I was hesitant to add any tip amount to my
Paypal amount just to keep it simpler. I do intend to tip you guys for doing this. Much cheaper than the LHBS.

I think you should keep it. Thanks again.

My analysis of all of this will be posted later today, but for you specifically... it appears that you were UNDERCHARGED by $0.33. :D

I'll be out of town next weekend and much of next week. Kirbster (Mike L.) said he'd be able to hold onto my grain until I get back, but he's working until 5pm Saturday. Could someone in Raleigh grab my bag for me (just 1 bag) and have Kirbster pick it up that evening?

Were you able to nail down where the discrepancies were? I'm intrigued. My money is on minor pricing changes since the catalog was published.

Walker said you owed an additional $100 payable to me. You should get a PM, but if not, just send me the money anyway. :mug:

I believe I figured it out, and pricing differences are one component.

As far as I can tell, and this is just with a lot of excel math comparing the price I had from the catalog vs the price that was listed in the spreadsheet, I found several issues with how everything was tallied-up.

(1) The fuel surcharge. We thought it applied to only one pallet's rate (20% of $65), but it actually applies to all pallets (20% of $130 in our case). BUT... this is an error in the other direction. If I correct this issue, then the spreadsheet comes up with an additional $13 added to the total.

(2) Sales Tax. This really where the error comes from. There was NO tax. No 7.75% added on to the price of the bags. No 7.75% added onto the shipping. We were not charged any tax at all by NCM, but tax was added in the spreadsheet.

(3) And finally, pricing differences. The price per pound is off by a few pennies on nearly everything. It could be differences since the catalog was printed, or it could be related to which facility we used. The catalog we used is from their NY warehouse, because that was the facility we used on the first bulk buy. But, there is a link on their website for catalog for each different facility. Reelale's "greatmalt" password does not work for the NC catalog, so I've never actually seen the NC catalog, and we just used the NY catalog.

If I correct the fuel surcharge on the spreadsheet and zero out the sales tax, then I see that:

- All Great Western malts are $0.04/lb less expensive than what was in the catalog.
- Canadian Malting 2-row was $0.04/lb more expensive than the catalog shows (all other Canadian malts are accurately priced).
- Best , Baird's, and Fawcett malts are $0.01/lb more expensive than the catalog.
- Franco Belgian stuff wasn't consistent. The aromatic was cheaper, but the other stuff was more expensive.
- all other malts not specified above were accurately priced.

In general, most of the grains appear to me more expensive than the catalog showed.

So... at the end of the day, we UNDERCHARGED for grain and fuel by about $50, but we OVERCHARGED via the tax by about $200, which gives us the $150 error.

For most folks, the over-charge was only a couple of bucks, and we even did had a few people that were undercharged by a few cents.

Since it was the tax that was the main source of error, the more grain you bought, the more your overpayment was. So, folks like BrewBear00 and Skip got hit with large over-charges.

I PMed those that got hit with the larger over charges today to let them know the amounts, but here's a full list of over payments for full disclosure:

You GRABASSholes are way to smart for me, LOL.

For my ( small ) overpayment, like I said - let it ride - you guys split that $3.25 and go get a McChicken sammich for your troubles....

We can make it right if needed. I don't think anyone here should have to support my habit. No sure if I can send .33 cents via paypal, so I'll go ahead and include the tip and cause more confusion. :)

I don't think anyone is concerned about the $0.33.

I'm mostly interested in what BrewBear00 and Skip want us to do here.

Just received this from NCM:

Hi!

Hate to bug you again but aside from confirming the credit card information I just found out the Hickory location does not have any GW 2 Row available at this time. Would you care to substitute the CM 2 Row at the lower price? The grains are almost identical. The only difference is one is grown in the US and the other in Canada. Please advise.

Thank you,

A.M.
Inside Sales Associate

I told her to sustitute CM for GW. So all 2-row will be CM. Please consider the price difference in this last iteration as a "Frustration Tax".

Ok, so I went through this thread and took notes of who could come and who couldn't, and who didn't respond. This is gonna be long, so sorry and bear with me.

Who IS coming:
barc (picking up for Reel if he can't make it)
fatguy (picking up for folts)
skee (picking up for stim, fbgillam, longdvsn through kirbster, mtbrider)
Walker
Chad
Hannable
joeybeer (MIL)
Seether (maybe) walker to pickup, unless you want me to get yours
Brewbear (does this mean skip is coming or you're getting his 15 bags? I hope so)
ezzie
marc (maybe) hannable to pickup if not

Who hasn't responded:
Moterbiker (2 bags)
NCBeernut (2 bags)
Moby (.75 bags)
Skip (15 bags, see above with BrewBear)

Please let me know if any of this is incorrect. Remember to work out splits with your partners. (For my fellow splitters, I'm bringing buckets.) Guys that haven't responded, please do. I know we have a few days, and if you're not sure it's fine to say that, I just am trying to figure out how many bags I have to bring home. I'm planning on brewing Saturday when I get home too so if you're not there by 10, your grain will be at my house. That is all. (I think?)

For those of you that need to pickup at my place, PM me for my address.

Thanks for reminding me. Barc said he would pick mine up.

skee (picking up for stim, fbgillam, longdvsn through kirbster, mtbrider)

I had offered (via PM) to pick up Stimulus' grain *and* deliver it down to him. He's got 7.5 sacks, so I was going to bring the minivan and grab it all.

But, I never got a solid "yes" or "no" from him on if he wanted me to do it.

skee, don't you live in cary? That's mighty close to me, so I may be better off just picking up from your place. 'Course, then I'd miss hanging out at the brewery with you asshats.

No, I live near brier creek between hwy 70 and tw alexander. Technically in Morrisville actually.

Skee, I looked up Brier Creek and it is considerably closer to me than the brewery (140 miles closer on the round trip). Now, I'll still drive the to the brewery and be there on time if someone tells me I have to but if you don't mind bringing that sack to Brier Creek I won't mind coming to your place to get it :). This would get Walker out of it and you into it.

I DO plan to get my grain this weekend one way or the other as I already feel like a loser getting people on the internet who I've yet to meet to do my legwork for me. I want to create the least trouble for all of us, including myself who would rather not burn the fuel getting to Durham if I don't have to. Like a dummy I realized, after I jumped in, that the gas to get to Durham and back eats up the savings the group buy afforded me over buying the same thing at the LHBS.

A big thanks to skee, Reel and Walker for their efforts and their willingness to help a fellow brewer get his grain. I'd love to meet you guys at the brewery but Saturday morning is about the worst time for me to try and drive 4 hours round trip.

That doesn't make sense. The brewery is only like 15 miles from Skee's house... there abouts.

So, round trip, the biggest difference it could make would be 30 miles.

Brier Creek is an area of Raleigh near the airport. Google thinks otherwise. If you look up Brier Creek, NC, it shows you an area of Charlotte.

I don't mind. I'll PM you my address and you can just come pick up sometime after 11:00am on Saturday. One more bag in the back of the truck isn't gonna hurt. It's not my truck anyway!

Oh, is that what he's seeing? Maybe, I should start saying RDU or RTP. I'm close to those too.

Yeah, but I'm nowhere near downtown Morrisville, so I don't want to give the wrong impression. I live on page rd between 70 and TW alex, that is nowhere near Morrisville! I miss Durham.

Yeah, but I'm nowhere near downtown Morrisville, so I don't want to give the wrong impression.

so, in order to not give a false impression, you use "Brier Creek" which isn't even a city and is ambiguous with like 4 other locations in North Carolina.

Well played, ******... well played.

LOL, wow. Glad that got aired out. The Brier Creek Google Maps was returning for me would be more or less in the center of the triangle created by the cities of Asheboro, Lexington and Denton.

I'm sticking with my original plan of getting my sack from Walker. :)

No worries. I figured you were coming, but you hadn't specifically stated so. And now there will be 4 of us...
