Racking to Secondary - Necessary or just Desirable?

There are LOTS of threads here on this topic and a relatively healthy debate, though it seems to me that most folks here (including me) skip secondary vessels unless adding flavor components like fruit or oak or dry hops (though dry hopping in the primary vessel seems to be gaining more and more practice) or if lagering/aging for a few months.
