How do you rack it to secondary carboy from primary carboy without getting any sediments into secondary? I can leave most of it behind but still get some amount transfered into the secondary using a siphon starter. I keep the tip off the bottom but as I get closer to the bottom, cannot avoid sucking some sediment up too.

P.S. I shared my first batch with some friends this past weekend at a party. It was a hit amongst the beer lovers. Got compliments to the extend that "the best homebrew they tasted ever". It was very satisfying even if they were fibbing.

RDWHAHB.

When you rack FROM the secondary on bottling/kegging day, you're again going to leave the majority of the unwanted trub at the bottom of the carboy. That's really the main point of doing a secondary. Suppose you left 90% of the trub behind. Next time you siphon, if you also leave 90% behind, that means you're siphoning 10% of the original 10% of trub: that's only 1%.

If your beer seems especially trubby when you set out to bottle, or if you dry-hopped with whole hops or other floaty stuff (fruit or whatever), try clamping a small, fine-mesh hops bag over the outlet end of your siphon (the end that goes into the bottle bucket.)

It'll slow down your siphon a bit, but it'll also catch any solids that get sucked into the siphon hose. Be sure to sanitize the bag and clamp, of course.

EDIT: I meant to add; congrats on that first batch. It really is amazing how easy it is to brew beer that is better than 95% of what you can buy in the store.

since i've been doing a lot of dry hopping lately what i do is rack thru a strainer/funnel - it might work for that sediment as well. the seiv is very fine
