Hello, I'm about to dry hop for the firs time. I read how to do so here but I'm wondering if I risk getting an infection by dry hopping. I have the hop pellets in a bag, do I just chuck them in the fermenter? Are they 'clean' enough to just go straight in? Should I boil them in water for a few minutes and dump them in with a bit of boiled water?

I just don't want to screw this batch up!

I put them in an unsantized bowl (clean) as I buy in bulk so I have to measure them then simply dump them in my fermenter. Never had an infection. :mug:

I usually sanitize a small funnel (about the size of a measuring cup) cut the bag open and in they go. Then I smell the bag about 40 times before throwing it away. Before I found the funnel in the drawer I just cut a small hole in the bag and dumped them in that way. If you want to keep the sediment out of your transfer from the secondary, get a 5-6 gallon size nylon strainer bag and put that over your racking cain like a condom and stick that into the carboy neck.

Once fermentation is complete, there really isn't a lot for stuff to start thriving off of anyway. Not to say that you don't need to be careful at this point, just saying your beer at that point isn't nearly as susceptible to infections or bacteria as your sweet wort was when you pitched the yeast.
