I'm getting a friend set up with a brewing kit, and he gave me a ring tonight during setup. Apparently, he stuck the thermometer on crooked, peeled it off, then stuck it back on again. He asked me if this would have somehow damaged the thermometer, or make it less accurate. I really had no idea, so I thought I'd ask the folks on here...

:mug:

AFAIK, the only problem is that the adhesive won't be as strong after peeling it off and resticking it. It might not stay on or it might start to peel up at the edges, but accuracy should not be affected.

One thing I learned from experience is that those stick on thermometers get damaged if you keep them in water. I had one attached to my primary inside a cooler and it got stuck between a few temperature points permanently. No problem for me since I bought a $3 digital thermometers and use them on both of my primaries. They are more accurate anyways and I still have 3 more of them ;)

I have the stick on ones on my primaries too and..I have always wondered it the temp is really accurate...not because of it being damaged but, does it really accurately take the temp of the liquid inside of the fermenter? or is it just the outside temp?

Which thermos are you using and how do you have it attached to the brew? I'm trying to get rid of those stick-ons myself. I don't trust them as far as I can throw them, but I didn't see a viable, cost effective replacement option.

I've used the stick on all of my betterbottles. They read within a degree. I did run into a issue with them getting ruined from condensation, but I remedied that issue buy putting clear packing tape over them.

For the OP. As long as he did not crease or damage the backing when he removed them, he should be good to go.

they can be damaged by removing, the numbers will shift and not line up. If one is carefull though they can be removd and reused. I think that they are accurate enough; I've kept fish alive for years using the same stick-on.

So you just hang the wire inside the primary and then just seal it shut? No damage to the wire from the tight seal?

So are they designed to stick onto the side of something? it looks like it's stuck onto the side of the fermenter, but I can't tell.
