I'm an extract + specialty grains brewer with about 10 brews under my belt. I'm about to do my first partial mash brew. I just got Northern Brewer's Rye PA kit. The grain bill is:

-- 3 lbs Rahr 2-row
-- 1.5 lbs Weyermann Rye Malt
-- 0.5 lbs Carared

http://www.northernbrewer.com/documentation/beerkits/PM-RyePA.pdf

I have a 2 gallon Igloo liquid cooler, a 4 gallon pot, and a 5 gallon pot. My question is, can I fit 5# of grain to mash in the 2 gallon igloo cooler or would I be better off mashing in one of my pots?

I plan to do the BIAB method. Thanks.

I use a 2 gallon cooler for my partial mashes. You're in for a treat with this one... I have brewed the RyePA from NB twice and it turned out great each time.

The grain bill fills the cooler most of the way when mashing with 1.3 quarts H2O per pound of grain. There would still be a little more room if you are planning on mashing with a higher water to grain ratio. I used more than the kit instructions call for to account for absorption by the grains.

Good luck with the brew session! Cheers!
