First, what I understand is you recirculate the wort through the grains again. Why is this done? Is it necessary?

I am assuming that BIAB does not require Vorlauf, since I understand we sparge with a gallon or so of water...

I'm just wondering because I plan to start my first BIAB this weekend and I've not seen Vorlauf mentioned in some of the videos I have watched on the process... So, in a BIAB process, is this something that I need to learn?

thanks!

Vourlaf is used to reduce the amount of husks and grains entering the boil pot from a mash tun. The mesh in your BIAB bag should perform the same function. No need in your case.

I'm sure there are those that sparge in BIAB, but I don't. Usually use the full boil amount during the mash, remove the grains, drain and boil away. 75+% efficiency.

I have always done full boil volume mash WITH re circulation. I insulate the lines as well. ... 80+ efficiency

It's to let the grains compact against the false bottom and create a filter. You don't need it at all because your mesh bag IS your filter. Lifting your grains does the identical step.
