So fermenting obviously produces your alcohol and CO2. Can you ferment directly in a keg, from the boil, and instead of having a typical airlock type system letting the CO2 out, just keep the keg sealed so the CO2 produced during primary carbs the beer naturally as well? Basically killing two birds with one stone?

Do people do this?

i've never actually done what your thinking but the only problem i can see with this is all the trub that will be at the bottom of your keg. when you go to dispense your beer your going to get ALL of that in your glass.

The process you described would make a TON of pressure, probably more than a keg can hold (130psi+).

Rack it to a new keg.

Using cornies as fermenters is pretty tried and true. I would link some posts, but a search will turn up 20+.

well i've heard an easy fix.. cut off the bottom inch of the tube..

and for overpressuring, doesn't a keg have a pin that will let out pressure if it gets too high?

As opposed to throwing shrapnel? Yes, I believe so. I also believe that the beer would be the most overcarbonated possible.
