Question about 1st time Kegging

Hey,
I have a chance to buy a small 6L cornelius keg. Since I never kegged before, would it be possible to completely cool it down 24\48 hours in my fridge before serving?

can I pressurize it with c02 for lets a week or two, disconnect it, put it fridge for 48H, then reconnect to c02 and serve it during a party? Maybe while its sitting in a watercooler?

Basically my only need would be so I can use it during family gatherings I host and serve 6L from the keg instead of bottles.

What you suggest should work. Just keep in mind that at warm temperatures you need to apply a much higher PSI to get to correct carbonation level after your beer is chilled. Their are many carbonation charts that should be able to get you close.
