Know anything about beer in Quebec City?

I'm headed to a wedding there this weekend and I'm told the city has LOADS of beer history. :mug:

Any brasseries worth opening my wallet for?

Any brews worth loading the truck with?

Quebec is probably one of the best places in N.America to get European style craft brews. Lots of belgium styles and great creativity goes on with most of the microbrassiers. I am a little to far south to know which places in that city are good but you can go to any groceries store or even corner store and buy decent beers.

Quebec has my attention now. I see that La Fin Du Monde is a highly decorated beer by Unibroue, after reading tasting notes on her I'm getting very thirsty.

This weekend is the winter carnival (think sub-zero mardi gras).
I read the official beverage is "caribou" made of whiskey, rum, and caribou blood served in a big "horn"....a good fight, f***, and fall in the river type of drink. :rockin:

what is the jail like in quebec?

Nobody's used caribou blood in caribou in forever.

As far as breweries...

Definitely check out La Barberie. If you pass through Montreal on the way, hit up Dieu du Ciel, they have a lot of excellent beers (you can also find them at specialty grocery stores here). You might also check out the Café au temps perdu, they have a pretty good selection of high quality beers.

Breweries:
- La Barberie. Nice selection of beer with seasonal specials. I've heard that they sometimes have stuff on cask. Good, honest, delicious beer. The "Rousse Bitter" is really good.
- L'Inox. Less choice, more pricey, less down to earth.
- Microbrasserie Charlevoix. This in an hour from Quebec, but it is worth it for the food and beer IMHO. Local products, world renowned beers in a little hole in the wall setting. Be aware that at this time of the year and with the -40C weather, it's not full and not all that "happening" but a good place to have a pint and a meal with friends.

You also have other options, but I have never been there except for l'Archibald and le Mitan. Their beers are nothing special.

Pubs:
- Saint-Alexandre. HUGE beer selection (rare Belgian beers and Scotch). They used to have bands. It's been a good 4-5 years since I have went there, but it's upscale.
- Saint-Patrick. Your typical faux Irish pub. They have good specials and food.

Beer store: Let me get this straight. YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO GO TO THE DÉPANNEUR DE LA RIVE. Go there before hitting any brewpub or you'll be missing out. It's not in Quebec per se, but it's close enough (10 minutes from Sainte-Foy). They have an insane amount of beers, many of them discontinued (largest selection in Canada). It's a hellhole to navigate and almost nothing has a price tag, but the guys working there know their stuff and can guide you in the right direction. McAuslan Oatmeal Stout you can get in any grocery store, but the Oaked Imperial Stout you can only get there and it is worth every penny.

Quebec City and montreal are not within beer drinking distance if in montreal check out
Benelux, dieu du ciel or Amere a Boire. If in Quebec city i can't help you too much.
Unibroue is much located closer to montreal then Quebec city.

Merci Beaucoup for all the good info. :mug:

Too bad about the caribou blood.

I have La Barberie loaded into the GPS, that place looks more my speed than L'inox. http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.labarberie.com&langpair=fr|en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools
I'll choose fellow bearded dudes over dress codes any day. swmbo fits in anywhere.

jfr, I'm ABSOLUTELY GOING TO THE DÉPANNEUR DE LA RIVE. Probably twice even, because I'll need to bring some back to the states for further inspection.
Am I going to come across as an American A-hole if I go in that store speaking english only? I play that role really well...or is it worse if I slaughter some french with a translation book in my hand?

Just say "boooo-juuur" when walking in, the clerk will no doubt switch to English. :D

I'm counting on that, M_C.

There will be a group of us likely tourists so it won't be as painful for the individual.

Maybe after a few pints I'll start getting brave....Une pinte de bière des Trappistes, s'il vous plaît.

I'd also check out "Le Monde des Bières" - http://www.lemondedesbieres.com/
You can use Google translate to get the site translated to English. You have access to almost all the beers they sell and you can even search by the type of beer you're looking for.
As far as not speaking French, don't worry about it. Just say "bonjour" and "merci" and you should be fine. If you want to make friends, make sure to talk about the potential return of the Nordiques... it's a very hot topic in "La Vieille Capitale" :)

Oh, and santé! (cheers!)

Haha. So you are saying I will get some high fives wearing one of these?
Nordiques%20jersey.jpg

The US dollar goes down and you get your team back? Someone should tell Denver.:D

After reading about English language in Quebec in the 60's it makes me want to learn some French. I guess I'll quit there because both of these topics are going to get us bumped into the DEBATE section.....

santé

Expect a lot of love if you wear a Nordiques jersey. You seem like a chill guy: you won't have any problems unless you run into our variety of inbred ******* who are stuck in the "English = devil" mentality. They are indeed a dying breed but they still exist and plague our land.

Good to know you'll be visting the Dépanneur de la Rive. Don't be taken aback by its chaotic nature. It's not the most welcoming place in the world display and layout wise, but you can browse for a good long time.

Super chill:D

But, still prepared to fight my way back to Maine if necessary..:rockin:

BTW, this was a shameless additional post to boost my member status...
