OK so I understand Original Gravity and Final Gravity. But when your brewing your own beer how do you know were to start with the OG? And if I want a high alcohol content would I want my OG to be high like 1.08 or higher? :rockin:

Your target OG depends on the type of beer you want to make. In general the higher the OG, the higher the ABV assuming you have good attenuation.

Check out Ray Daniels' book. It gives lots of info about different types of beer and how to make different styles including references to OG, FG, BU:GU ratios, etc.

It depends on your definition of "high alcohol content". There's a calculator here where you can play around with some numbers. Truthfully, I wouldn't start off trying to make a 10% beer since there can be a bit more to that. Make a few 5-7% beers and get the hang of everything else first.

Second that, give 'Designing Great Beers' a read...I was just reading the chapter last night on malt bills and how to arrive at your estimated O.G.
