This may be a dumb question...

I'm thinking of taking up kegging instead of bottling, and while I like a project as much as anyone, the keg will probably have to go into the existing garage fridge at first. This fridge is currently used for beer in bottles, but also other drinks and overflow from the house and costco trips, etc.

If I put a corny keg in the fridge, I'll have to rig up some different shelves (the current ones are glass). Anyone have a good solution for this, or pictures of a kegerator that they use for regular food as well as beer?

I guess I'm wondering if I should wait to keg until I can dedicate a fridge/keezer too or if my family and I can share a fridge with a keg in it.

Its not dumb, you can just use a picnic tap to serve from. Not the ideal way to do things since you'd have to open the door everytime you want to pull a pint but if thats your only option there is no harm in that method.

I went dead simple and just cut some 3/4" plywood shelves to fit over the compressor hump on the bottoms of my two brew fridges. I supported the front edges with vertical plywood bracing tied to plywood sleepers resting on the fridge floors.

In any case, peaceful coexistence with a "food fridge" can be frustrating. I recommend you troll your local Craig's List for fridges, and dial in your price/condition.

In a few weeks of looking, I picked up a pair of 17cf top freezer units for $100 each. The first one was literally brand new and still had the blue shipping tapes holding all the shelves and bins in place, sold by a yuppy couple that bought a house filled with brand new white ware and they were set on stainless appliances. The other was a 2 year old unit from an apartment house, whose owner was in default and was unloading everything in a hurry...

Cheers!
