Propane Burner

Not sure if this is the right forum but:

I just bought a propane burner from the local Home brew shop last week. I've searched the forum for help but so far nothing has worked for my problem. I can get the burner to turn on but with very low output. It took me 3 hours to get 7 gallons from 160f to 212 F. If i turn up the gas the flame just goes out. The burner looks like the Bayou Classic SP 10 but doesn't have any brand marking on it. i've tried adjusting the air flow, taking the hose off putting it back on...

Anyone have any suggesstions on how to get the output of the Bayou classic that i've seen in videos and heard about?

Sorry to ask the obvious question, but has to be asked.

Did you make sure the valve to the propane tank was fully open? Adjusting the flame up on the burner will be throttled by the output of the tank.

I would take the burner apart, sometimes debris or cobwebs get inside and interrupt the flow of gas.

yeah the tank was all the way open... i can get the burner to burn low but when i increase the pressure on the regulator it goes out

Sounds like this is a new burner so may not be the issue, but I had a boil over that led to my burner getting gunked up and therefore burning very weakly with a yellow, sooty flame. Had to take everything apart and soak in PBW, after which it worked fine again.

I've also had flame issues when my propane tank was running low (took forever to get to a boil, and then kicked out entirely at the end). Just another thing to check.

Since it's brand new though, I might suggest just returning or swapping it at Home Depot -- you shouldn't have to troubleshoot a brand new unit.

Check the orifice.....and make sure it's propane and not natural gas.

By chance do you have a gas grill to connect your tank to to confirm the flow is not restricted somehow at the tank connection or by the regulator.

Can you hear gas flow?...you definitely should be able to.

Or it just could be the regulator.....I'd take it back.

i think i may have worked it out. THough it didn't look dirty i took it apart and put it back together. I put it back together and started it up. I got a bigger flame than i was able to get before I took it apart...I don't know why or what happened i'm doing everything the same i just now can get a little bigger flame...or what feels like a bigger flame and the water is heating up faster than yesterday too so who know. i took hours the other day to get the water going today it's going up about double the speed of yesterday so i know know...THANKS

This can happen due to a flow restriction valve sensing a rapid opening.
In other words, shut the regulator and bottle off. Open the bottle, then slowly open the regulator. Flow should be normal after that.
I've had this happen a few times on my burner(s) as well as grills.

On many systems you need to open the valve on the gas tank first, then the regulator on the burner.

If you do it the other way around it doesn't work properly.

Any regulator with an ACME nut requires that procedure. The excess flow check valve is located inside the plastic nut...

I had brewed last year with a bad orifice. Something got in to the jet and clogged it, didn't realize it till the beginning of my boiling attempt. Took me 2 hours to boil my wort down to the desired level. It never hurts to take your equipment apart and check it/clean it.
