Removed the door from my basement fridge and built an insulated box around it with some leftover lumber. At the lowest setting I can hold 50 degrees easily with no added thermostat. Works great. I can now lager 40 gallons.:rockin:

Looks good! I'm going to try something similar as the weather warms up. Is that FRP inside the box?

It is just foam insulation cut to fit. Then I just caulked all the seams and wrapped the entire outside of the thing with a moving blanket that we had lying around.

I've been considering doing something like this with a mini-freezer that we have. I thought about trying to remove the compressor and coils (they run inside in the shelves) but figure I would just end up puncturing something and losing the refrigerant. Now I'm thinking about simply removing the door and building the box big enough to fit the freezer inside in one corner?

Seriously, I would not post it here unless it worked very well. I was considering just buying another old used fridge off Craig's List but the problem was it would only hold another 10 gallons. Carboys are bigger than you think.

Lagers take a long time and that being said I wanted to be able to store a lot of beer for a long time. This is the best thing I have ever built for my brewing.

I try to remember that successful brewing comes from patience and patience comes from have plenty in reserve (ready to drink). I figure the more I have ready to keg the more I can take my time brewing another quality batch.
