I refuse to watch Superbowl half time shows. They are always so stupid. I decided to look at HBT instead.
Now back to the game! :mug:

I thought that was awesome!
His tele sounded great, his strat even better, and his crazy purple guitar sounded cool. AND he played a FooFighters song.

Much better then Janets Jacksons fake white **** pop out.

I was wondering if maybe I was watching a different halftime show. For a guy you hardly ever hear from I thought it was pretty rockin', and I am by no means a huge Prince fan. The dude definitely needs to get that axe out in front more often. :rockin:

Definately better than the Stones for sure. Prince seemed to start out crappy but I thought the Purple Rain rocked.

I thought the "All Along the Watchtower" spin was interesting. The way he was playing I kept thinking of Jimi.

Oh and yeah, WAY better than The Stones.

I missed the show (putting Cassie to bed), but the best halftime show I've ever seen was U2 during the Pats/Rams game, and I don't think my memory is colored too much by the rest of the game. "Beautiful Day" and "Where The Streets Have No Name," with all the names of the 9/11 victims running up the huge banner.

**** the politics that have happened since, nothing compared to that performance. Nothing.

Prince is highly underrated as a guitar player.

These half-time shows were worse...

Spot on. Prince can rock an axe with the best of them. I thought the entire half-time show was awesome. Prince just oozes energy. And seeing him do Purple Rain in the Purple Rain was pretty cool.

The best version I've ever seen of Purple Rain in concert was when Phish played it in Deer Creek in 99. Fishman forgot the words, but MAN what an AWESOME vacuum cleaner solo.

Prince was great. What was lame was the pre-game show. Cirque du Soleil? Yeah, thats the way to rev up a bunch of football fans, great idea there
MAde about as much sense as having Elton John headline the Harley Davidson 100th celebration in Milwaukee.

I don't think anyone mentioned the obvious but at the very LEAST you can give them kudo's for making the audio LIVE instead of a lipsync track that you usually get at the bowl. In fact, I think the Stones were playback.

Prince sucks. I agree he is incredibly talented but I hate his music style. But yes, it was better than the Stones...... I'm still waiting for Buffett to do a halftime show...........

Prince is a dedicated performer. I think he'd be appalled by the thought of lip synching.

Also, do you guys remember the Stones self-censor of Start Me Up last year? They took out the "You make a dead man cum" line.

My guess is the Superbowl bigwigs caught Prince's performance at the American Idol finale last year and liked what they saw.

I'm no Prince fan, but that was a killer halftime.

Prince is awesome. He's a musician who puts his heart and soul into his music. Purple Rain is definitely one of my favorite albums of all time. This half time show was definitely much better than the last several years.

What is up with his aunt jemima do rag? If my buddy hadn't gone to school with his wife in germany i would swear...................................................

At least he dosent wear the word slave on his face anymore. that always made me want to punch him.

the guy can play guitar but he is so god damn weird.

I'm not a huge fan, but thought his performance was great. Very energetic! I usually turn off the half time show, or watch it for the commercials, but he was quite the vivacious performer.

Behind the name change
In 1994, during negotiations regarding the release of Prince's album The Gold Experience, a battle between Warner Bros. and Prince ensued, struggling over the artistic and financial control of Prince’s output. During that time, Prince only appeared in public with the word “SLAVE” written on his cheek. Prince explained his name change as follows:

The first step I have taken towards the ultimate goal of emancipation from the chains that bind me to Warner Bros. was to change my name from Prince to . Prince is the name that my Mother gave me at birth. Warner Bros. took the name, trademarked it, and used it as the main marketing tool to promote all of the music that I wrote. The company owns the name Prince and all related music marketed under Prince. I became merely a pawn used to produce more money for Warner Bros.… I was born Prince and did not want to adopt another conventional name. The only acceptable replacement for my name, and my identity, was , a symbol with no pronunciation, that is a representation of me and what my music is about. This symbol is present in my work over the years; it is a concept that has evolved from my frustration; it is who I am. It is my name.

Prince’s strategy behind the name change seems to have been to reinvent himself, going back to a smaller audience to redevelop his style. One commentator noted:

Prince started his career as a big R&B star with limited mainstream success. At that point, he left the middle of the road and headed for the ditch. In 1980, it was risky to record new wave songs with lusty lyrics that assured no radio airplay (the classic Dirty Mind), but it paid off. Critics took notice and he became an underground favorite. This paved the way for his huge success with 1999 and Purple Rain. Certainly that was the pinnacle of his career, as far as worldwide earnings and universal adulation are concerned. But by heading for the ditch again, by changing his name and experimenting with his style, by lowering his stock value and escaping his record contract, Prince has become an underground artist again. In late 1996, the first collection of Prince music since his break with Warner Bros. appeared in record stores, a sprawling three-hour extravaganza integrating great dance grooves and slow-burning ballads. Critical response has been overwhelmingly positive, and sales have been brisk despite the high price of a 3-CD set. It's no coincidence that he titled this album Emancipation.[7]

Best halftime show, period. I've always liked His Purpleness, but not enough to by one of his albums. As Joe Walsh put it, "Prince is a decent musician when he takes his head out of his pants." And I know of a couple of people who aren't 'fans' that went to his last Chicago concert and raved about how great it was.

But after seeing him last night, I'm now more inclined to pick up a CD and see one of his shows. The guy still rocks, especially for a 48-year-old.

BTW, great '10 link', Chairman!

I didn't really pay attention much to the half time show other than he was out there. But my wife said the same exact thing about aunt jemima and she does like his music. Maybe it was the rain thing going on. I told her he was probably bald now :D.

ok, we watched it this morning and except where he sang his own songs, we liked the show. lol - matter of taste :)

the marching band was cool
