Corn sugar is the most typical type of sugar to use but any type of sugar can be used in different volumes to include brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, lactose, molasses. Each will give you a different result. Whatever floats your boat.
 
Cane sugar is not as refined as corn sugar. Cane sugar can leave a cidery taste.

I'll agree to disagree when we're talking about priming. There's such a small amount used in priming that you're not going to get any cidery flavors from the sugar. If it was more than 25% or so of your grist than I might agree...
