Places around me charge about $15 for hydro testing, so I think new price - 10% -$15 is probably pretty fair. That said, the more the price is reduced, the faster it will move. I've seen a lot for sale on local classifieds and it doesn't seem like they sell very fast unless the price drops below $50.

If you're buying the tank, make sure the sale is contingent on the tank passing the hydro test. If it fails, which a friend of mine's did recently, then you're out of luck.

Ha, I was thinking the OP was selling. Yeah, if your buying, I'd definitely make it contingent on passing. Personally, I wouldn't buy one without the seller agreeing to have it tested first.

If you're looking for good deals on tanks with current hydros, I'd recommend checking out ezryder's thread. I've ordered from him before. He ships very quick and even with shipping charges, he's cheaper than any local supplier I've found, and also usually cheaper than private sales.

Thanks guys, I was looking to purchase, not sell. I will probably wait to find one in current hydro.

The hydro date may not matter. Do you plan on getting the tank filled or just exchanging it at a gas supplier? Where I exchange my tank (Airgas), they don't care if the hydro is out of date on the tank I bring in. For me, it's more convenient to exchange a tank than have it filled and the cost is comparable. If you want to go the exchange route, you may want to call your local supplier and verify their policy on hydro testing dates and what tanks they'll exchange. I was lucky a while back and found some used, out of date, 20lb tanks for around $20, but $50 is the lowest I'm seeing on Craigslist lately.

Wow$20 is a steal. That must vary from shop to shop. I exchange mine at Airgas too. Mine used to offer refills on demand, but they changed the policy about a year ago and now only do exchanges. About half the time they check the hydro.

Free or less.

I exchanged an out of date (1984) 20# tank that I got for free... $20 for the exchange, $35 for the testing. If I was in the market for another 20#er I would definitely look for one from this century.

Don't knock the old tanks, my current 10# tank was manufactured in the 40s I think 1942, but maybe 1944

Damn, son!! I thought I cornered the market on antique tanks. Is yours made out of stone, lead, asbestos, women's suffrage, and black and white moving pictures? Probably held upright by that brand new invention; Velcro.

I wonder if that tank helped serve beer to the crew of Enola Gay.

Yeah I actually don't want to ever let it go just because it helped win the war. It is one heavy sob though.... Hence why I am looking at aluminum 20 pounders

Just call the welding shops in the area. All of them around here just do a swap no matter what the hydro date is.

Just an idea.

Keep in mind if it is stamped Pepsi or Coke you are probably out of luck there..

Cheers
Jay
