I have a Ranco dual stage controller that I have been using for fermentation temp control. Now I am looking into creating a HERMS system. Here is the setup I am considering:
1. Use a pot and mount a 120 V/2000 watt heating element:
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Camco-20...-Density-Water-Heater-Element-15120/204219916

to it using a weldless heating element:

My one question here revolves around the amps as was discussed on this thread:

2. Plug the heating element into the heat plug on a dual stage Ranco controller:

3. Connect a weldless thermowell:
http://www.highgravitybrew.com/productcart/pc/Weldless-Thermowell-Kit-157p3407.htm
to the same pot and place the Ranco temp prob in it.

4. Set the Ranco at desired mash temp (or a little over as may be required)

5. Recireculate my wort using a pump:

from the mash tun to a 50 foot coiled SS chiller:

that will be sitting in the pot mentioned above to maintain temp control.

Will this work? Should I instead look at a PID?

Thanks for your help!

The Ranco is rated for 9.8 Amps so it won't work. Get a PID and SSR.
