Almost every kit I've done says 4-10 days but, most people here follow a different path.

2-4 weeks (yeast is for sure done and they've eaten their dead and all of the undesirables sink to the bottom)
OR
10 Days and start taking OG readings (if you have a hydrometer) If it's been 3 days and the OG hasn't changed, beer is done.

I prefer 3 weeks but am doing a 12% beer now that is going to sit around for a while and then a lot longer in bottles to achieve balance.

I let mine go 2-2.5 weeks then take a grav. reading. Then bottle at the 3 week mark (give or take based on my personal schedule to bottle) and take a FG to confirm fermentation is done.

My general 'rule of thumb' for fermenting/primary time is as follows...
<1.060 ~3 weeks
1.060-1.075 4 weeks
1.075-1.085 5-6 weeks
1.085+ 7-8 weeks, or more

When aging on oak (cubes, staves, honeycombs, spirals, etc.) I start with 4-6 weeks and go from there.

The bigger beers often have time with oak too, or some wood. I have an old ale that I used a pound of cherry wood smoked malt in, that's been sitting with some toasted cherry wood in it for a while now. It's around 9%, so it's all good. :D
