polyurethane finish opaint

I am making a hopper for my new MM3 grain mill out of pine and I'm wonering if I should or shouldn't put polyurethane finish or paint on it? I thought that it would be easier to keep clean with some sort of a finish on it. Originally I thought nothing of it, but a friend is concerned that it won't be food safe.

I'm confused, don't you crush your grains doing BIAB?

I'm trying to figure out if i should leave my grain mill hopper raw wood or put some kind of finish on it.

The guy that owns the LHBS in my area built his hopper out of wood and just left it unfinished. It works fine, I wouldn't worry about finishing it.
