For an IPA, it is a little high on the crystal at over %13, but for a heavily hopped red ale it looks pretty good, although I would add a touch of roast barley or choco to add just a background roasty note.

Hops schedules are too each his own, but I would double the dry hops at least.

i dont see the point for carapils if you're already using other crystal and wheat malt, its not gunna really add anything more.

I agree with you on this as well. I really don't see the point of carapils in general.

I would use 1# of darker munich instead of 2# of lighter munich. You mileage may vary.

I thought it was for body and head retention

it is, but so isn't every other crystal, so if you already have 9% crystal like in this recipe, its effect is kinda null. plus with the wheat and all those hops, head retention shouldnt be an issue, and even without the other crystal, you could just mash higher to get the body.

Bingo!! Carapils is worthless IMO

I dont think carapils is worthless, but it all depends on the recipe. With all of the other crystal malts etc you dont need it...but for myself, I dont use crystal malts in my IPA so a little of this goes a long way.

for me, I would simplify the recipe. Cut back on the carared, dont use the carapils or honey malt, and add a touch of carafa to give you the red color. Only a couple of ounces will give you the color you want.

since its an IPA, you might want the caramel notes but you still want it to dry out, so dont overdo them.
