Plastic water bottles for carboy?

I can get the large heavy plastic water bottles used for in home water dispensing ( culligan etc) for five bucks each. Are they safe to use for secondary fermenting( carboys) ? I know glass is best but in a pinch could I use em with no ill effects on either beer or wine?

You will be fine as long as the they are type 1 or 2 plastic. You could also use to make apfelwein as it doesent form a krausen with the wine yeast.
