I bought two pick up tubes for my brew kettle and my mash tun. The idea was to connect them to my ball valve so I could pick up the remaining wort. After installing them I filled both vessels with water to see exactly how much wort I would be leaving behind in the kettle and mash tun. This is were I need your help! It seems that the pick up tube are not working. The liquid that is left behind stops at where the ball valve is located(as if there is no pickup tube connected). Is this normal? Does anone have any ideas to what I did wrong? There is still a good half inch of tube in the water. Im clueless and getting ready to chuck the damn things.

You need to add tubing to the outside of the vessel at the ball valve. It will create a siphon to drain down to the pickup.

Yep, it's amazing to me how many people install the diptubes and immediately do a test with nothing connected to the output. Picture this setup from the side, as if it were a cutaway view. You're asking the liquid to go uphill for no reason. Siphons work because the liquid on the output side weighs more than the liquid being sucked up on the input side.
