Penrose kettles

They look awesome, but am I right when I say that, from pictures, it looks as if it's a pot made from a sheet of stainless steel rolled into a cylinder and welded up the side opposite of the spigot and with a bottom welded on? If I am correct on this, doesn't that seem a bit odd and potentially problematic?

Also, is the bottom thicker than the walls or the same?

I'm working with a local guy who makes kettles the same way (10 gauge bottom, rolled sheet for the sides). Done well, I don't imagine you would have any problems.

I would urge you find a few examples of the Penrose kettles to examine first hand before committing to purchasing...

There's no way I'll be able to find one locally for me to examine.

I have one and I like it. It's not perfectly round so finding a lid would be tricky. Some use trash can lids. I've been using a cookie sheet.

The welds seem well done and the kettle is very sturdy

Ive got two of these kettles, I had a 10 gallon Blichmann and sold it when I decided I wanted a 15 gallon kettle. I bought the Penrose when I decided i wanted something well made, sturdy, and without all the bling of a Blichmann. It would be nice to have a lid but I don't really need one on a boil kettle anyway.

These are a quality product.

Thanks for your input guys but I think I'm gonna stick with the 15 gal Mega Pot from Northern Brewer for Christmas. Those welds on the Penrose worry me too much.
