Wanted to share my experience. Decided to make a pecan brown and instead of using fresh pecans (wanted to avoid the oils), I used an extract. I bought a small 4 oz bottle and poured in an ounce of flavoring right before bottling. Two months after bottling and the beer is absolutely god-awful. The beer has mellowed, but the extract is bitter and leaves a disgusting aftertaste. I've been trying it once a week for the last month and the flavor has not changed. It is still terrible. I figure I'll give it one more month and if things don't improve, dump it.

Well, people always say fakeness will be intensified, so I think imitation was a mistake. Additionally, 4 oz is probably wayyyyyyy too much. You should've tasted after adding small increments.

Thanks for biting the bullet on that one so to speak though.
 
To avoid the oils, I've had good luck roasting the bejeezus out of the pecans several times, then storing them in a paper bag to let the oils seep out. I've also heard of people soaking the nuts in vodka for a couple of weeks to get the flavors out.
 
No question about it, even one ounce was too much flavoring, but even so the pecan flavor is not overwhelming, just the bitterness. The Lazy Magnolia version is sublime; unfortunately when it came to making my version, I got the lazy part down perfectly, but missed the rest. Next time I'll go the extra mile and use real pecans.:D
