is there any reason to do a partial boil then add water rather than doing a full boil and just topping off other than the quick cooling off ?

or is it better to do a full boil and use a wort cooler or other method of cooling ?

i've got a beautiful 8 gal pot sitting in front of me and all the other do-dads on the way . seems kinda silly to just boil up a couple of gals then add unless there's a valid reason .

thanx , Woody

Full boils are better but people do a partial boil due to brewing on a stovetop etc. Either way you'll still make beer.

Generally, boiling more is better than boiling less.

Reasons for partial boils are mostly logistic:
-easier to cool small volume, then cool more with top off water
-easier to boil small amount on an underpowered heat source (like a stove)
-easier to move it around
-faster
