Pantyhose as Hop Bag?

Just curious if anyone has tried it and what preparations should I take before brewing if I decide to try it?

I've never tried it but it should be just fine, it will also give you some ideas for an interesting name for your beer.

I sanitize all of my hop bags prior to adding the hops, other than that - go for it.

are those paint strainer bags reusable? also what is the normal price on them? would feel pretty awkward buying pantyhose and not sure if they would have any dye that would leach into the brew

Pantyhose do have dyes that leach out in clear water. worse under acidic conditions.

And frankly, while they did work they were a hassle.

If you do choose the hose route look for the white or naked colors. neither of those leach color.

I'm a woman, so no personal problem buying pantyhose, but I regularly use the knee high pantyhose that come in the little "eggs" for about 50 cents at Walmart as my dry hopping bags. I buy the "nude" color and have never had an issue with off flavors or leaching. I soak the hose in warm Star San for a couple minutes just in case to check for any bleeding prior to use, but that's probably paranoia. They work wonderfully for dry hopping. I have never used them in the boil kettle though. I do use the nylon paint strainer bags for my hop additions during the boil. They work great, no problems, and are reusable.

I'd go for the bigger ones, I have 5 and six inchers and wouldn't recommend putting more than 2oz in them, the pellets really expand a lot. I try to only put 1.5 oz in the 5 inchers and 2oz in the 6ers.

I've used them, and found they work pretty well. I'll second the comments to get nude or white, and to sanitize. Other than that, no problem.

Large 5 gal paint strainer bags from Lowes, Home Depot etc are pretty durable, definitely reusable several times. I'm not sure how or why a person would overthink this simple approach.

Where did you find the 6 inchers? The biggest I can find is 5.5" x 3.5" ?

they tend to get a bit miffed when you stuff hops down their crotch and get downright violent when you try to coax them to stand in boiling wort.

just bought 2 5 gallon paint strainers and they stretch over the top of the pot i'm using tommorow (5 gallon pot). should i just stretch it over the handles when it's time to boil?

To those who mention sanitization.
Unless you are dry hopping with them, you are throwing them in a pot of boiling water for an hour. What germs are there that can survive that that will be killed by some starsan?

Unless you're using the used stockings as someone suggested in which case....

You do this on the way to the bottling bucket or keg? Or from kettle to fermentor? Does it strain out pretty much any leftover trub?

I boil them for about 5 min and put them In some starsan. I use them to strain the wort coming out of the boil kettle. I never thought about straining coming out of fermentation though. Use only new panty hose. Don't reuse. I do have a coarse strainer that I sanitize and put over the fermentor. It holds the panty hose because they do such a good job of catching hop scum they get kinda heavy and droop quite a bit.

Sounds wierd I know. But until someone comes up with something cheap and easier I'll stick to my stockings lol

Depending on amount of hops rubber band would work.

I picked up all the parts for well under $20 including the paint strainer bags which were $5 for 2pak. Pipe coupler was about $4. Threaded hooks where cheaper than shorter lag bolts and where about 2 bucks a piece.

Built mine to fit a keggle I was going to pick and build up on the cheap, but I never got the keg.

one more thing what size drillbit did you use to drill through that rubber ring?
