i have been using the remaining one step package that came with my used brewing kit, but i am out now...

my LHBS guy says he uses oxiclean.

another LHBS guy told me any powered dish washing solution.

what do you guys think?

Did the LHBS guy give you a dilution at which to use Oxy Clean? And I assume he's saying that you can use it as a no rinse sanitizer?

It's not labelled that way, but then again, neither is one-step. (Not labelled as a sanitizer, that is: we've discussed this a few times before.)

My concern would be that oxygen cleaners, when used as labelled, definitely need to be rinsed because they leave a resisue on things.

well i use the one step as a cleanser and then use iodophor for sanitizing...

the LHBS guy did not mention dillution :(

that's the first I've ever heard of using Oxy clean to sanitize. I don't know if it does it or not. However, It is very true that it leaves a gnarly haze on stuff. I'd stick with the one step.

i was talking about oxiclean as a cleaner, not a sanitizer... :mug:

I use Oxiclean. No problems with haze or residue :drunk:

I always rinse after cleaning, even when I used to use onestep.

do you use the oxiclean versatile, like the picture i posted?

and i rinse after my one step also. just doesn't feel right, not rinsing... :cross:

Ah...OK.

MOst people who use one step actually use it as a no-rinse sanitizer. Apparently, the only reason it's not labelled that way is because there are a lot of additional regulatory hurdles to be lept in order to label something as a sanitizer.

One Step seems like it'd be a bit pricey as a cleaner. Oxygen cleaner is very effective but does need to be well rinsed. I buy a generic version at the dollar store.

And good old bleach is a great cleaner, too (and cheap). I soak carboys overnight in a strong bleach solution and then rinse them very thoroughly.

how much do you use to a 5 gallon bucket of water?

thanks :mug:

Well, the tub I got came with a little scoop. I use maybe 1/3 of scoop to clean my buckets and carboys. Doesn't take much.

i just picked one up at target for $3.49

Yeah, that's the stuff. I bought the stain remover free type, but I don't think it makes much of a difference.

I use oxyclean as a cleaner only and sanitize with star san.. I have this thing about Hydrogen peroxide in my beer..It's ok to put on a cut but seems weird in a beer.

cool, my pattern will now be cleanse with oxiclean and sanitize with iodophor...

I have used One Step both as a cleanser and sanitizer. Real long time I've been doing this actually. I started using Star-San in carboys, but have still used One-Step for everything else. I have either been lucky or brew half way decent not to have a brew go bad on me yet (of corse the very next batch is going to go bad huh :) ) I dont know why I primarily use One -Step although the warnings on some products give me a bit of concern.... One-Step seems just too easy of a product to screw up.
