Thinking of grain...

Need to buy grain...lots of grain...

Which grain gives me the most bang for my buck/will allow me to brew as many different styles as possible...?
2 row?
6 row?
Munich?

2 Row for sure. Almost no point to buying 6 row at all. Munich is great for parts of grain bills in small to larger amts. depending on style....... But 2 Row is your "go to" grain.

I keep stocked up on American 2 row, and belgian Pilsner.

It really is going to depend on your favorite styles.

I like Belgians (dubbel, Trippel, quads, strong ales and Saisons), as well as IPA's, porters, and stouts.

If you like american ipa and/or stouts/porters then 2 row.

Munich is a good all around grain, but used more as an addition not as a base on most styles

6 row, as far as my preferences go, is more of a specialty grain. Unless you are using a lot of adjuncts.

Briess or Dingemanns.

Here is my suggestion for a new AG brewer (this is what I did) for first 3 beers:

Beer #1: Briess 2 row / Cascade SMaSH

Beer #2: Rahr 2 row / Cascade SMaSH

Beer #3: Maris Otter / Cascade SMaSH (my favorite!)

From there I added various Crystal malts / Munich / Vienna / Honey Malt to experiment on my next batches.

Worked my way right into some hearty IPA's that I am currently enjoying.

I use a lot of Briess 2 Row both pale ale and brewers malt. I prefer brewers malt as it is less grainy and slightly lighter in color.

If it helps, here is my shopping list for the end of January, when I head to Portland to stock up for the year: 2 bags of Great Western Premium 2-row, 1 bag of Crisp Maris Otter floor malted 2-row, 1 bag of Bestmalz pils, 1 bag of Bestmalz light munich, 1 bag of Bestmalz vienna, and 1 bag of Great Western Rye. I brew 10-15 gallons a month, and this will get me most of the way through the year depending on the gravities of the brews.

Rahr 2-row is my go to malt, but Briess is a great product too. I guess I am partial to Rahr because I know some of the employees at the malting facility and I have been there a few times. If you ever get the chance to tour Rahr malting facility, do it, its incredible. Ill post some pics if anyone is interested.

There is also a new malt from Germany being distributed by LD Carlson called Avangard. Nice price and quality malt from what I have researched. It was a big seller at our last group buy.
