The real problem is that if they don't send the bottle you can't file a paypal dispute over a gift payment.

You can gross up the purchase price and pay the fee yourself in order to get some insurance. PayPal (and your credit card company, if necessary) will fix it if the item is not received. That said, in my experience sellers as a group are more responsive and reliable as a group than traders are.

Sure you can add the fee yourself but the shadiness comes from the fact that the seller asks for a gift payment and usually doesn't even mention this^^. If you are a seller that doesn't want to pay the Paypal fee you should just tell the buyer to pay the 3% on top of the purchase price. If I'm looking to drop $500 on a bottle I'm not sending the money via Paypal gift and I'm not buying from someone who wants me to.
