Ok so it was my first brew and was curious about what was taking place in my bucket. So I opened it and closed it several times after the bubbling really slowed. Is that a problem or did I let out some magical fermenting gas? I Will do better next time but just wanted to learn and what was taking place?

While co2 is heavier than o2,I'd keep the openning & closing to a minimum. You don't wanna stir up the air while it's open do let some of the co2 to get blown off. Not much is produced after initial fermentation is over. Any air movement can do it.

Your better off not opening it unless you have to like step feeding and transfering. Though chances are you didn't harm it in anyway. My advice to you is get a carboy then you can see the whole fermenting procese without opening it. Just keep it protected from UV light.

yeah,I even keep my plastic fermenters covered with dark tee shirts just to be sure the UV is kept to a minimum. Better safe than sorry.
