I have one pound of crushed malt and one ounce of carafa II

I'm thinking I could do a 1/2 gallon batch.

Start with 1 1/2 gallons water, BIAB, boil down to 1/2 gallon, ferment in a 1 gallon spring water jug (my bung and airlock fit that.

Are my numbers right, approximately? I realize this is only going to yield about four 12oz beers. But I have the ingredients now, won't be in a situation to combine them into a bigger brew for a few months, and don't want them to go bad.

1.5 boiled down to .5 will give u an approximate abv of 5.5% assuming you get 75% efficiency and 75% attenuation. What about hops?

I agree. You should get about 4 to 5 bottles (maybe a full growler) of beer about 5.5% alcohol depending on yeast.

Granted it would be hard but is it really worth your time to make 4 beers? Obviously it is up to you but to do a BIAB to save 1 pound just isn't worth it to me. Especially when it only makes 4 beers. That is 2 hours of work for 30 minutes of drinking (or 15 minutes of drinking on a football Sunday).

H ha I didnt even think of that, for 1.50, I'd toss it or give the grains to a friend before I wasted the time for a growler. Guess it might be fun to see if you could do such a small batch.

Have you looked into coffee pot brewing? (http://www.phillybeerscene.com/2009/12/brewing-beer-in-a-coffee-pot/) It could be a fun experiment. I've done a few batches. Some worked better than others, but they were all drinkable.

Or you could make a braggot (beer/mead hybrid). If you take the half gallon of wort, and add an additional half gallon of must (mead equivalent of wort), you'd have a braggot. 1 to 1 1/2 lbs of honey will probably be enough.

Also, I disagree with h22lude. As long as you're having fun, it is totally worth your time to make 4-5 beers. I've done it before. I'll prob do it again.

Very interesting concept. I would actually like to given it a try.

Don't get me wrong, brewing any size batch is fun but personally I wouldn't waste my time with even set up and clean up for 4 beers. I would at least get more grains for a half batch. That's just me personally. I love brewing but to brew for 4 beers isn't worth it to me. I would want at least 12. Enough beers to last me the time it took to brew lol. If you have fun brewing 4 beers, definitely do it! It is good practice.

That's an interesting idea (coffee pot brewing). Might have to give it a go, but I'm gonna get an el cheapo coffee machine specifically designated for the task. I'm not going to let anything spoil or taint my life blood (coffee). If I were to do it, I'd ferment in something other than jars though. Maybe a couple of growlers with rigged airlocks.

Loved the Dark Tower series, but not so much on the Graff. It's a beverage with a serious identity crisis.

Serious identity crisis? Maybe, but no more than any other number of beverages. You've got braggot (beer/mead) and cyser (cider/mead), and I know Dogfish Head does a wine/beer called Noble Rot...

All with identity crisis. If you like it, good on ya man. Personally I don't get it. Guess I'm old school. This is also coming from a guy who likes coffee flavored coffee. Don't give a hoot about the half caf double caramel count chocolate fwamacino that my wife goes on about for $7!

Coffee black - totally agreed. Mixing some unfermentable sugars in with apple juice leaves you with a cider that isn't horribly dry. I see it more as problem solving than confused identity. Like you said - to each his own! :mug:
