What can I use for a small secondary for experimenting with flavors (coffee vanilla ect ) with out buying a small carboy .can I use a one gallon water jug or something?

Go to the bottle redemption center and get a 1 gallon wine jug. I get my flip top bottles from the redemption center for like $0.06.

Where do you live? We don't have any thing like that haha

He is basically saying check the recycling center. I found my 1 gallon fermenter in the recycling bin of my apartment complex.

Around Thanksgiving or Christmas people often use jug wine to make hot boozy drinks. I find that is usually the best time to score glass gallon jugs.

Otherwise you can sometimes find apple juice or apple cider in a glass gallon jug.

Yeah, I made Brandon O's Graff with 4 gallons of good cider. Wound up with 4 gallon jugs to use for starters. :)

Good Idea... I could just buy something in a glass jug. That's what I will do. Maybe ill make a aplfwine

I get empty 1 gallon glass jugs for about $4 at my LHBS. I use them for lots of stuff. I like them better than erlenmeyer flasks for starters. Pick up a couple of stoppers and you're good to go.

You can also pick up small food grade buckets at some of the home improvement stores. They don't always have them, so if you see them buy a few.

Yeah I was thinking id have to get stoppers.....but do I ? Couldn't the caps work? Or is there a chance of some more fermentation if I add something with sugar?

I've have several Carlo Rossi wine bottles that are 4 liters, which is just slightly above 1 gallon, that I use for multiple purposes. A bottle of that wine will cost around 11-15 dollars, and you end up with a free fermenter. I have also used 1 gallon water jugs many different times. Water jugs are probably the easiest to use, because you don't have to worry about cleaning it afterward, just get rid of it! And they are mostly #2 plastic, which is perfect for fermenting.

Yeah I may just go the watter bottle route. This time and for the price of that bottle of wine. I could just buy a gallon glass carboy and not have to drink the wine

Around here Whole Foods sells the same jugs for $0.50 less than the LHBS, and as a bonus they come full of tasty apple juice. :)

Is there too much head space in a regular bucket fermenter? (If I don't get around to getting the jugs)

1 gallon glass carboys are usually under $5. I highly suggest you get this...you can get 38mm screw caps for them that screw on and perfectly fit tubing and a 3-piece airlock. No way that lid is coming off. I think the 38mm screw caps are like pennys for each, they will split at the seams after 10 or so uses...especially if you push the airlock in there tight. I do with a string holding my hop bag for dry hopping and they tend to start splitting but I have had a few that I have used almost 20 times with no issues
