Hey everybody!

New member here out of Denver, CO.

Brewed up a batch yesterday and split it into two fermenters and pitched equal amounts of yeast into each respective fermenter. One has taken off and the other is slow going. It doesn't have the same amount of proteins floating around as the first fermenter.

Any idea what might be up?

Thanks!!

JD

Hummmm. I assume they both have the same temperature. It could be lots of thing! One might be more aerated that the other, one of the fermenter is more clean than the other etc... All kinds of variables.

What yeast did you use? How many hours/days since you pitched the yeast?

I wouldn't worry about it and just see if in the end they taste the same.

Happy brewing!

My money would be on differences in aeration - maybe one of them go shaken up more, or the wort splashed more when it was transferred to the fermenter.

My next guess would be the yeast. When you say that you did equal amounts, how did you measure it? If it was dry yeast and you did a packet in each, then perhaps one of the packages was older and had less viable yeast.

Either way it sounds like they are both fermenting, so at the end of the day you will be left with a lot of good beer to drink!

Another yeast vote here. Happyhopper has good questions.

Thanks for the reply's!

I aerated them about the same and I eyeballed 1/2 a vial of WLP007 into each fermenter (these are 1 gallon batches).

The second one finally caught up and got really vigorous. Luckily I was able to keep the temp at 70 and they're slowing down now so I think it'll be ok.

Just have to remember to RDWHAHB sometimes!
