Went to the market to get some fresh vegies for my salad and something "drew" me to the beer isle. And there I saw "Black Butte Porter" six pack for about $9. Ok I want to brew a porter so lets sample one.

OMG, it's wonderful. I can taste sort of a chocolate/coffee I think somewhere in there. It's so smooth. What's really funny is SWMBO took a sip like she does w/every beer I sample and had a big smile on her face. I think she's gonna have one w/dinner tonight.

I have a Black Porter recipe in Beersmith but can't remember where it came from, but it's similar to a clone I found "Googling".

The clone calls for a honey malt. Not sure what that is. But I think I'm gonna brew some kind of porter VERY soon.

Honey malt. Gambrinus. Brewmasters Warehouse carries it. I've used in several beers. Smells just like honey!

I've found that honey malt at JW Dover as well in 8oz (.5lb) bags. They can be steeped, but it is said that mashing brings out more of that honey goodness. I'm thinking of trying a mini-mash with it for my tropiweisse. Thought it might taste good with a banana producing yeast, orange zest,a like amount of this lemon & lime juice crystals I found at the store (separate flavor boxes).

Honey malt can self-convert but it works better with a base malt. I'd do a mini or partial mash to best extract the flavor and sugars.

I really like this beer as well. My wife picked some up for our weekend camping trip (in a travel trailer) and I was blown away. It is a regular now.
