So the Oshkosh corporation landed a big military contract recently and is actually hiring. They had a two-day job fair yesterday and today. I went today. They started a 9:00 and I got there at 9:15. The line was already stretching around the lot and down the street. So I got in line and waited. And waited. And waited. At 11:00 I made it all the way to the door. The line inside the building was longer then the line outside. At 2:00 I was finally done. At least I had a second interview, so I am still in the running.

All told, there were almost 5000 applicants at the 2-day fair, all applying for 400-500 entry level jobs, probably paying around $12-$14 an hour, and only 2nd and 3rd shift. That gives everyone who applied a 1-in-10 shot.

My point? Obviously things are pretty bad when you have that many people show up for a job fair. I just don't understand how people can bitch about their jobs in a time like this. At least you're working.

I hear you.

Is it possible to hate your job, but at least be thankful you have one?

I feel for anyone not working right now and wish you all the best.

There was an admin position here for the city and 500 applied for 2 jobs. Pretty bad. My work is hiring right now and we have had like 20 apps for one position. This said, I just talked with a guy that is about to quit his job. WTF I asked? Just done with it he says. I think he is crazy, it pays like $50-70K. Whatever...

Regardless of the economy... I never bitch about my job. It is a blessing, it provides for my family. Even though I have to wear a funny hat.

I complain about my job, but always realize that is better than the alternative and count the multiple plus's of it. I feel for those out of work and hope you land one of those positions Bernie.

Matt Up North - Does that guy you talk to have any more drugs to sell becuse he must be on something amazing!!

I plan on job searching the minute it appears the market is picking back up, but am very happy to be working nowadays.

All I can say is that dude is crazy. I mean, around here $50k doesn't go as far, but it sure beats Starbucks by a long shot. What the hell is this guy giving up that kind of money and for what. Polotics of work, disorganized workplace? Accept it for the next two to three years and then move on.

Fortunately I've never been one to bitch about my job. I've always felt a bit grateful to have it. I make good money, I love what I do, and I have a bit of time to dick around in Beersmith and on homebrewing forums while I'm there. All in all it's a pretty damn good deal for me.

Hopefully you're one of the 1 in 10 shots, Bernie. Keep us updated.

To be quite honest, it would be bittersweet if I get in. I would be sooooo grateful to be working again, but it's not what I want to do for the rest of my life. Being a factory rat is not my idea of a fun job, but I'll do it. And be happy to do it, at least for awhile.

Wait a a gotdanged minute here. Oshkosh? Military contract?

What are they doing? Making flak jackets for toddlers now?

Haha, no. Not Oshkosh B'gosh. That stuff is made in some sweat shop somewhere. The Oshkosh corporation (formerly known as Oshkosh Truck, or just Truck) builds military vehicles, fire trucks, and other heavy-duty municiple vehicles.

It may not be what you want forever but I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for you. Having a job is good for lots of reasons including finding the job you really want.

Good luck Bernie!

It's funny how some stores hire idiots that clearly are there just to get paid and have no passion in what they do.

How long would your drive be in to work? IOW, whereabouts are you? You're always welcome to stop in for a beer.

About 4 years ago at my last job, the plant manager wanted to get some more potential hires into the place, but he didn't like the price that the local papers were charging and we never seemed to get much interest via that route. So they paid for a big "Help Wanted" sign. Me and another guy were charged with the task of setting up the sign. Took us about a half hour, and in that time, we watched about a dozen cars pull into the parking lot. Over the next two days, we had almost a thousand applications, but the funny part of it was that only about 30 or so were actually qualified to work there. And of those, I would only say that about 4 were worth a crap. Truly amazing the spectrum of people in our workforce.

More like "people are applying for anything because they really need to". God I hate my job so much. I wish I could quit, but I know it'd be a death sentence right now.

I did a job Fair last month THAT RESULTED IN 248 ONLINE AND 47 IN PERSON applications.

I manage a restaurant.
we opened a new location ..... we stopped counting applications at 750

If I win the California lotto and move home.... you will be employee #002 :)

Well, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you, Bernie!

I'm going to be in Milwaukee on August 13 & 14, going to see Phantom on Thursday the 13th. I was thinking that going to Lakefront on Friday for a fish fry might be fun. I didn't talk to any of the other SEWAGES yet, but if you're able, maybe we could get together again.

(Note- you could talk beer with me, but then talk a little Brewer's baseball with Bob. His eyes glaze over when I talk about beer for more than 30 minutes at a stretch).

Good luck Bernie! Congrats on the 2nd interview.

I think it's always better to be busy, that's why I hate my new job. Before someone complains about me complaining - Brandon said I could.

Mechanical engineers can bitch about their jobs, and there are still shortages for engineers.

Hey Bernie, I hope you are able to get this one and continue to look for what you want. I think the economy will pick back up, unfortunately it will be slow.

I also am just thankful to have a job, and I work for some really great people. God's definitely blessed me. I'll be praying for ya man :)

You fly airplanes. That has to be cool anyway. You are like the Top Gun of commercial aviation, Maverick.

Honestly, I don't know why I dislike my job so much. Hell, I'm at work right now. I think it's the desire to work outdoors. I've spent my career in a submarine or windowless office/watch room.

To any of you looking for work right now, good luck. I hope things turn around for you faster than a mild goes from grain to glass.

My area has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Basically, it's timber and the Casino. Timber is tied to the new house market and you have to be a member of the Seven Tribes to get a job in the latter.

Oh, I forgot to add ... I'm in newspapers. In Michigan. Could my employment prospects BE any crappier?

(I'm actually only part time now, so I haven't been deemed worth laying off. For now.)
