I have two old glass carboys that are quite old. I was given them by a local college that use to store/use chemicals in them. If I were to wash with oxyclean and hot water and then sanitize with PBW would these carboys be trustworthy? Any advice is appreciated.

They will be fine. That's why chemists use glass. They don't hold any components of their previous guests. Wash like you said and be happy for free grass:fro:.....I mean glass.

Good score!

I just received two old glass carboys as well, one still in the styrofoam with a hazmat sticker. My wife's grandfather made many batches of wine in it after cleaning it out really well before passing it along to us. I didn't think twice about using it as a primary.

Just watch your terminology and use of cleaners there - PBW is another cleaner, not a sanitizer! So long as you keep that in mind you should still be in good shape!

Thanks everyone! I meant to say StarSan, but great news. I'll have to check for any hairline cracks.

I'm new to the forum and it may be trouble for me....I find myself pulling this site up quite frequently at work
