They are but I didn't pay anything since I was within my limit and had been there the full 48H.

8.5L (free of tax) per person for a 48h stay.

same quantity under 48h but they will tax you.

To give you an idea of how ridiculous **** is, just one province over (ontario) they can drive in with 45L.

The Americans yesterday were not happy with the amount I had yesterday (even though it's way less than I usually have), but that's because I went through a podunk crossing in the middle of nowhere. From now on I'm only using the crossing big 24/365 crossing. I stood around for well over an hour and got to pay for the privilege of them being clueless.... all $11.00 of it.

11$ for us is usually a good deal. Especially if we'd be bringing back 36L and stayed less than 48hours. They would tax for 8.5L and then probably confiscate the rest unless we had a license to import alcohol.
