I presume they paid a deposit to the distributor, and in turn would have normally charged a deposit at the retail end. But since they are going out of business and liquidating it seems clear they give zero ***** about getting the kegs back.

Very few breweries (at least in IL) actually own their kegs unless they are exclusively self-distributing and not moving through a distributor for exactly this reason.
