Today I bottled my first batch, which is an IPA. I taste tested it while taking a gravity reading and noticed a somewhat soapy flavor. Is there something that could've caused this besides the obvious reason of not rinsing the soap or sanitizer good enough??

Did you use tap water without filtering it? I had this issue with the chlorine in my local water. It could also be bad extract, post your recipe and ill take a look.

I experienced the same thing with my first IPA (which was recent). I was pretty certain my cleaning/rinsing/sanitation procedures were fine.

I dry hopped in secondary for about 10 days.

A brewer from a local brew pub said our water here is too soft and 10 days was too long for secondary. He suggested adding gypsum to the boil and dry hopping for more like 3 days.

My recipe was:

8 #s Maris otter
1 # aromatic
1 # caramel 20L
1/2 # wheat flakes

Mashed at 153 for 60 mins

Hop schedule:

60 min 1oz warrior
50 min 1oz chinook
30 min 1oz willamette
15 min 1oz saaz
10 min 1oz willamette
5 min 1oz saaz

depending on your sanitizer of choice it could be a rinse issue if you don't use a no rinse option. I would bet its the water since you are doing all grain. The chlorine mixed with the yeast can make funky flavors.
