3) You don't seem to understand what 'secondary team' means, it's not like an ex-wife.

I did learn that when a team plays at a high level and wins a few recent championships (like the Cowboys around '95) it gets to a point where the losses hurt WAY more than the wins feel good. Switch to team like the expansion Jaguars and the wins feel good WAY more than the losses hurt.

No... I understand what it means perfectly... and it's sad and lame to have a "second team". You either root for a team or you don't... and you can't root for two teams since they might play each other at some point and all of this ridiculous, "Welllllll... I like THIS team more today so I'll root for THEM" is.. like I said.. sad and lame.

and yeah, your whole Cowboys, boo hoo hoo, I don't like it when they lose argument is a steaming pile. Good times come with the bad. That's part of the package.

It's just sports, just entertainment. People can enjoy them (or not) as they please. You can root for as many teams as you like, or none. Getting all caught in 'what a good fan is' is just pathetic. Having a man-crush on your QB and somehow associating yourself with the success of your team is pitiable.

Awesome... and if that is how you feel you should probably start the "Obnoxious Knitting Trash Talk" thread and you can talk all of the mamby pamby, "it's ok to love everyone" wussy talk there.

I really only have one rule for being a good fan. Well, two really.

You can't quit on them when they're down. Wear that Andre Tippett t-shirt with pride, even during the Rod Rust years. Go to the websites, read all the articles, you can be mad and frustrated and all that but you still need to care.

If you're going to CHANGE teams, there needs to be a valid reason - and there ain't many. Leaving town when you're under the age of ~12 can be OK.

If your hometown team leaves, you are allowed to adopt their former archrivals. In the NBA, I don't expect any Seattle Sonics fans to root for Oklahoma City. They can and should start rooting for Portland.

If a new team comes to town, you can (and should) become a fan of theirs - but I'd argue that you can keep rooting for your old squad as well. They didn't do anything to you. We buy local beer, we support local sports franchises.

If you are a fan of a team with a particularly egregious owner (I'm thinking of like Marge Schott with the Reds), I *might* allow a one-time transfer of support, as long as you gave that team the ol' college try. The only way to get rid of bad owners is for them to lose fans.

Bill Simmons buying season tickets to the LA Clippers; **** him.

I'm reconsidering my last "bad owner" exception. Didn't stop being a Pats fan under Victor Kiam. Didn't stop being a Celts fan under the Gastons.

I still say - youth or your team leaving the city are acceptable reasons to change allegiances.

ok... MAYBE... it CAN be ok.. sometimes

Disagreed... you can't have a team forced on you. That's like... fan rape. If your team bolts, you can either follow that team or become a free-agent... as long as you pick a crappy team. You can't all of a sudden become a fan of the most dominating team this millenium... the New England Patriots. Only way you are on that bandwagon is if you live here or where a fan before they were the most dominating team of this millenium (check both them boxes fo' me).

I'm with you here.

I agree on all of that except the rival. You should never under ANY circumstances become a fan of the rival team. NEVER. Your team leaves and you want to switch, then fine but it damn well better be a different division or better yet different league/conference.

Now while I don't think you can be a fan of two teams, you can have another team or that you like. This team really should be in the other conference but within the same conference should be at least a different division. Its ok to enjoy watching more than just your team win. With me I am a die hard Ravens fan but there are other teams, more particularly other players on different teams, that I like to see do well.

With all that said, I am probably going to be switching basketball teams this year. I know I know, it is hard to admit. I am a Nuggets fan but the only reason I was ever a nuggets fan is because MD doesn't have their own team and I am a very big fan of Carmelo Anthony. He probably won't be there next year and as long as he doesn't go to LA or NY I will probably just follow him. 1 caveat to that though, I am not a huge nuggets fan or even a huge basketball fan to begin with.

Exactly... a secondary team! :rockin:

Whatever... NO ONE loves huge nuggets more than you. That is a fact. It's science.

Ok, I lied.

No, that isn't a secondary team. It is another team that you kind of sort of enjoy watching win. If your team isn't playing and they are then you will watch them and hope they win. You don't get worked up over the game, or yell or throw things like you would your team.

A secondary team is your backup that you will root for if you primary team is doing bad or they changed their uniforms.

I don't have any real teams that I am a secondary "fan" of, but there are teams that I will usually root for when I see them on TV. The Pack, for example.

Why?

Love Clay Matthews, wanted the Pats to draft him. Love how his dad and uncle played what, forty years combined and missed maybe half a season between them? Old-school player.

Like Aaron Rodgers. Came into what could have been a terrible situation and has really excelled. Gotta respect that.

Team's got tradition.

And, **** Brett Favre.

Am I a Packers *fan*? Nope. If they're on, though, I'm usually rooting for them to win. I'd never buy a Packers jersey, which is probably the best measure if you would consider yourself a "fan" or not.

dataz722 = Airborneguy... team flip floppers!!!

Lemme guess data... you like the Ravens because of the cool purple unis'??

I KNEW IT WAS THE PURPLE CAMO!!!!!!!

EXACTLY!!! I like watching the Rams for Mark Clayton and probably soon Troy Smith on the 49ers.

WTF? Secondary team? It's one or nothing. Do you have a 'secondary' wife for when yours doesn't put out? (wait, that might not be a bad idea).

Having a secondary team means you don't have enough conviction to stay true to your first.

Go back and read the past few pages. I wasn't saying I have one, *******.

BULL****!!!! I have been die hard since 96. I stuck with them through 4 and 5 win seasons. Even stuck with them through Boller.
Oooh, 14 whole years. BFD.

I've been watching the Pats since the olden days of Jim Plunkett and Steve Grogan and John Smith and Sam "Bam" Cunningham and Russ Francis and Steve Van Eeghen and ...

Man, those were some lean years.

Not exactly possible to have followed them for any longer, that and we can't all be 108 years old.
