I have beer I am making a "brut" out of.
I have some oatmeal and craisins, this was ready to eat oatmeal with craisins. About 12 oz of oat meal and 12 oz of craisins in the freezer now.
Is there a way to add it to the secondary and ferment these further ?
If so how ? Like boil the oat meal and mash it and filter it and so on and add to beer with amg and put in yeast ?
Is there any recipe that lays it out - I am not finding it on google yet.

If I do this, this will be my first pseudo wort or 1/2 wort.
Basically how to make fermentables out of oatmeal.

Thanks.
Srinath.

Oatmeal needs to be mashed to convert the starches into sugars. Adding it into the secondary will leave you with soluble starches which would provide food for bacteria contamination to thrive.

Your best option is to add these ingredients in the post-packaging stage, which would be in your stomach. Wash down the oatmeal with the beer (breakfast of champions!).

You could "mash" the oatmeal on the stove, just get some amylase enzyme from your LHBS and stir it into the hot (150f) cooked oatmeal, giving it 45-60 minutes to do its job. I think if you use both alpha- @160, then cool down to 140 and add some beta-amylase, you would convert the starches almost entirely which would help to dry out the beer and avoid excessive haze.

Are you trying to impart the flavors of a bowl of oatmeal? You won't succeed in adding any flavor of the oatmeal itself, at least not in the way one would typically think of how a bowl of plain oatmeal tastes. You might have more luck adding common oatmeal flavorings along with the craisins, like cinnamon, nutmeg, maple (flavoring works better), etc. to recreate the profile of a bowl of oatmeal with all the fixin's. I'd even explore imparting some butter flavor, but that's just me.

I'm more thinking of something that uses up the oat meal without me having to eat it. I don't want to throw it away either.
Now its got craisins as well as some brown sugar on top, which would likely allow me to separate the oats and sugar from the craisins.
Would it be an idea to just add craisins chopped up etc into the beer along with amg. As a finisher or sorts, if that's even what it is.
Let me do more googling.
Thanks.
Srinath.
