I have been researching the various minerals, manures and fertilizers that could be beneficial in the growing of hop plants.

David Beach recommends the use of Boron in his book, Homegrown Hops. A simple Google search mentions seaweed as a good source of Boron as well as an all around good fertilizer. I have a bag of organic Nori sheets I used when I was going through a "make your own sushi" kick last spring. I don't plan to use them and I wonder if they would contain enough Boron to prevent a deficiency as well as be used as an organic fertilizer. Mr. Beach adds that only a pinch per hill of borate granules would be needed. I wonder how a Nori sheet would compare to Borate granules? I assume the amount of Boron in the Nori sheet would be far less.

At the same time, I don't want to overdo it with the Boron.

This website gives nutritional analysis for another species of Porphyra algae, which I imagine is similar to nori. They list the boron at 33.4 ppm. It would be interesting to compare the nori nutritional information with commercial seaweed fertilizers.

My guess is that the nori sheets wouldn't provide very much nutrition for your plants simply because a pack of nori doesn't weigh very much. Of course, any second use is better than throwing them away! I'm about to mulch my garden with bad coffee we were given, so I can relate.

Nori is expensive! I love making sushi but it costs so damn much. For fertilizer you should see what they have at local farm stands. That's where I get that good stuff for my Cascade hops.
