I am making a brown ale for my first batch. I hit my Sg perfect at 1.050. After 1 day the airlock was bubbling away. After 2 days the temp jumped and the bubbles were slowing down, so despite what i have been reading the past 3 weeks before i started this, I panicked! I put the bucket in an ice bath and the Airlock completely stoppped. I took a reading and it read 1.018, the recipe shows a FG of 1.010-1.012. I just put it into the secondary after 6 days and it still reads 1.018. Is this Ok, should i re-pitch more dry yeast (muntons was used), or do you think it still will ferment a little more after transferring to Carboy?

any help would be great!

What temp is the beer at now? What yeast did you use?

Remember, the airlock is not always a sign of fermentation. Use your hydrometer readings. 1.018 seems a little high though.

In the future, don't transfer to the secondary until fermentation is complete. Secondary fermenter is actually the wrong description for this vessel. It should really be called a clearing tank. All fermentation should take place in the primary.

Don't panic though, you haven't ruined anything. I think a little more information from you will help us diagnose the problem though.

I am still new at this, but I believe you still have a bit of fermenting to go. You probably took it off the yeast cake too early. You should gently swirl the caraboy to try and rouse some of the yeast that may be sitting at the bottom, this is usually a technique used for primary but may have an effect in the secondary. If after a day or so no change, I would then repitch yeast.

I am sure some other guys can give some more detailed advice. Good luck.

it is sitting at 68-70 right now but during ferementation it was at 72-74. After i posted this i just noticed the airlock is bubbling every few minutes, so i am assuming it will be Ok, thanks for the help though.

The kit came with Muntons dry

Right it'll be fine do another reading in a few days and you'll hit your FG.
FWIW; I've had all kinds of crazy things happen during fermentation and I've never had a batch go bad though.

Do you think i should re-pitch if my gravity doesn't come down, say after a week in the secondary?

For six gravity points? No. Let it sit for two weeks in secondary (the 1-2-3 system), bottle it and enjoy it.

I'm with Bernie. I'll bet you'll pick up those points over the next two weeks and whatever is left will ferment out with the bottling sugar.

thanks alot, i will try to stay calm! What i need to do is start another batch, since my primary is free'd up now, any suggestion on a good summer brew?
