Noob question about secondary

Since there is not much fermentation going on when in the secondary, is it necessary to have an airlock in place or can you just have some sort of stopper. Which is better?
 
It still is fermenting and putting out CO2, just much, much slower than during primary fermentation.

You would be best advised to use an airlock. It will probably blow a stopper out of the carboy.
