Was just getting all my stuff out to get started and noticed I used the last of my soap that came with my kit. Being Sunday the brew supply store is closed. Is there something I can buy at the local Wal-Mart to use to clean my supplies with? Thanks.

I do have the Star San just no soap.

OxyClean Free. Emphasis on the "Free" part because the normal stuff will leave some lovely scents on your equipment without very serious rinsing.

Also, +1 on rinsing well. I lost a full batch of beer due to not rinsing my bottling bucket well enough. The last place I could have possibly ruined my entire batch of beer... I still use Oxyclean Free mixed with TSP/90. I just double rinse.

Just got back from the store. Went to Lowes and Wal-Mart with no luck finding any of the TSP 90. I did manage to find the Oxy-Clean free though so I'm just going to use that, rinse thoroughly, and use the Star San. My wife was investigating while I was gone and told me that someone said we shouldn't use the Oxy-Clean with hard water so we are going to use spring water to clean with.

I use seventh generation unscented dish soap and I've had pretty good results. Can anyone with more experience than me comment?

Are we talking about pots and such? I just use normal dish soap... My pumps and chillers get PBW. Once all is washed and rinsed, hit it with Star-San,.. DONE! I will use PBW to so soak fermenters after fermentation. That helps... But if we're talking about pre-brewday cleaning, normal soap is fine. No need to over complicate. Cheers

I wash pretty much all ss stuff, buckets, lids, mash tun, wort chiller, and my kegs with seventh generation dish soap and a brand new sponge (not using the abrasive side on plastics) then hot water rise, and starsan before use

o.k. cool. Lowe's did have TSP but I wasn't sure if it was comparable to the TSP/90. I'm probably over washing and sanitizing everything but I hate the thought of not having a batch turn out. I'm sure its bound to happen eventually though. Again, Thanks for all the input.

I use dish soap, if it's stubborn I soak with Oxyclean. Then hit everything with star san

I steer clear of regular dish soap like dawn or palmolive. Have heard they can cause head retention issues. I have started mixing 30% Red Devil TSP/70% Oxy Free. Rumor is it's the same mix as PBW but about 1/10th the cost. Works like a charm. 1 tsp per 5 gallons of the hottest water from your tap or heated to 125 degrees and let it soak for an hour or so... gunk comes right off.

IIRC head retention issues relate towards washing the glass in certain soaps. Thats why most pubs use the quick dunk and rinse method.

WTF is seventh generation soap, some kind of reclaimed soap or?
