I don't want to mess this up so lets get it straight. My breaker panel is in my utility room along with my only 30 amp receptacle (the dryer). My utility room does have a sink but there's no ventilation and it's uncomfortably small (prison cell). My kitchen is ca. 18 feet from the dryer.

So, if I want to brew in the kitchen (like a normal human). And I want to use a 5500 watt element controlled by a 240v Blichmann BrewCommander with a L6-30 plug (which I do). And I don't want to make holes in the drywall to drill through half a dozen studs to bring in wire for a new receptacle I need to:

1. Replace the current 30 amp "dryer" breaker with a new 2 pole 30 amp GFCI breaker. [$90]
2. Buy a 25 ft. NEMA 14-30 4-Prong 30 Amp 125/250-Volt Heavy Duty Extension Cord. [$110]
3. Get a L6-30 to 14-30 adapter. [$40]
4. ???

Am I missing anything? Will this work? Is there an easier way to do this?

It's enough. However you can buy a 10/4 SOOW cord, required plug and receptacle and make extension cord yourself. This way you can save around $60 and get rid of extra adapter. Plus you can make extension cord with length you exactly need.

That’s a really good idea. Never would have thought of that. Thanks.

I did similar. My “cords” come straight out of auxiliary panel because I needed it to be modular, as I don’t know how long I will be in my current place, and wanted to be able to remove it all and take it with me.

I have 2 L6 30 cords and receptacle in in use box enclosure, and a separate 110v gfci protected resettable in same.

Total length of each is 20 feet. I spent under $200 for the 2 @ 30 amp cords and box.

Two things.
If you plan to plug the controller's 120v plug into a separate outlet in the kitchen, just build a 10/3 cord with nema l630r in the kitchen end and 14/30p on the other. Dont connect the the neutral because you wont use it on the other end.

If you want to run the pump off the same dryer outlet, you can use 10/4 cord and just hardwire it inside the controller to eliminate the dual short input cords IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Essentially the neutral wire only goes to the pump receptacle and nowhere else.
