I haven't tried to make beer in years (since around the time I made this account) and I don't have any of my old equipment. A few weeks ago, someone gave me a 5 gallon plastic water bottle. I had nothing to do that day and I didn't have much money either. I figured I'd blow the afternoon making beer!
I bought five pounds of "pale 2 row" and 5 pounds of flaked wheat. The beer store guy (who is a bit of a snob) asked what kind of pale 2 row. I said I didn't care as long as it was A) pale; B) had 2 rows; and C) was cheap. he asked what recipe I was using and what SRM I was shooting for. I said, "Dude, I don't know what an SRM is." He rolled his eyes and got me some barley and wheat.
I also bought an oz of Citra hops because the chart said they were, um, citrusy.
I boiled 3 gallons of water (all I could fit in my kettle) and then put it a cooler with the grains, which I tied in a t-shirt. I don't know what the temps were because I don't have a thermometer. After an hour I poured the water back into the pot. I threw in the hops, about a tablespoon of crushed coriander, and then I grabbed six clementine oranges and squeezed them in my hands until they were well-mutilated and tossed them in too. Boiled for a half hour, then I put it in the carboy and topped it to around 4.5 gallons with tap water.
I attempted to cool the carboy by running a cold shower over it for an hour. It was still pretty warm when I tossed the us-05 yeast in there, but I was getting worried and the starter was running over the cup. I fermented it for 2 weeks. Then I primed and waited until today to try it. I didn't have any bottles, so I went and bought a bunch of 77 cent 2-liters of soda and poured them out.
Freaking Delicious! Light, tart, slightly hoppy, and decent ABV (I have no idea what the actual gravity is).
I had no idea it was so easy. I have so much delicious beer.
