Hey there, I am brand new to homebrewing and have taken the plunge by ordering what (I think) I need to make my first batch. I am using the K.I.S.S. philosophy for my first batch and using the recipe for beginners in the Joy of Home Brewing Bible that calls for hop flavored malt extract, water, ale yeast, and plain dried malt extract for bottling. I ordered the amber liquid malt extract from AHS (http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?cPath=178_21_72_132&products_id=11512), but can't figure out whether or not it is "hop flavored". Will this be okay, or do I need to add some hops separately?

I also ordered the Briess Amber Dry Malt Extract (http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?cPath=178_21_72_133&products_id=143) to use for the bottling process. Will this suffice as the "plain dried malt extract"?

Thanks!

Pete

It should tell you on the container. I get alexander's and it says "unhopped" on it. judging by the site, I would say no.

It would say it was hop-flavored it it was. Luckily, you can get some hops and it'll just be a tiny bit more effort to make beer. Do you have a local store near you? If not, you can order hops from another store to avoid the flat AHS shipping fee.

As for the plain dry extract, that will work, although you can also just use table sugar or sucrose. The amber may add some flavor, although not much.

The normal malt extract from AHS is NOT pre-hopped. Lots of the european and austrailian pre-packaged malt extract kits are pre-hopped, like Muntons and Coopers kits, but hardly any American ones are.

Yup,just plain amber extract. I'd use the plain DME in the BK for a couple hop additions,& add the LME at flame out. LME caramelizes easirt than DME. This way keeps colors lighter,& flavors cleaner.
